The One Restaurant on Urbanspoon
Dad and I had an appointment with the Chinese herbal doctor this morning...yups...yucky, bitter, dirt-water medicines...but hey...it's good for us!  Hehehe!  Anyways, Buddha Boy took the day off so I made him drive us to the clinic, then after, we had lunch with dad.  Since we had to pick up Buddha Boy's sister, MoMo, from YVR later in the afternoon, we really did not want to head into Richmond for lunch, so we thought we would stay somewhere in Vancouver or Burnaby.  In the end, we decided to try The One Restaurant, brought to you by Lao Shan Dong Homemade Noodle House.
The place looked more like a karaoke lounge than a restaurant.  The tables were too close to each other.  The seats were way too bulky for the tables.  Moreover, there's a piano sitting right at the entrance...for what?  Honestly, I don't know whether I should use the word "horrendous" or "horrible" to sum up my experience at this restaurant...I mean...c'mon...the service was terrible, the food was below par (though, couple items did taste okay)...really, they can only fool people who have not yet been to Taiwan or who knows nothing about Taiwanese food.  Remember our visits to Magnetic Cafe?  Well, that being #1, this would be #2.
Salty Deep Fried Chicken Nuggets (鹽酥雞)...this was one of the okay dishes...acceptable texture and flavor, however it was over-seasoned with five-spices...way too much powder...
The One Egg Roll with Green Onion (香蔥蛋餅)...holy...why make the name so complicated?  It's just simply a Green Onion Pancake with Egg...anyhow...skin was thick and sauce was way too salty...we did not enjoy this.
The One Deep Fried Pork Large Intestine (香酥肥腸)...I'm gonna use the word "horrendous" to describe this dish...the "inner" was not cleaned thoroughly, the skin was chewy (as it has been sitting for a long time, then re-fried), and it had very minimal green onions...one word...GROSS!
Ok, one would think that being the subsidiary of Lao Shan Dong, the noodles should be up to par...well, not in this case.  Dad ordered the Braised Beef Flank & Tendon with Noodle in Soup (半筋半肉麵)...and according to my dad, it was, well, not awful, but close to it.  You see, after being in the food industry for more than half of his life, my dad knows what's classic or authentic.  He does not often complain or picky about food, however, he did this time.  He thought the noodles were over-cooked, soup was bland, meats were flavorless, and most importantly...where was the preserved sour veggies (酸菜)?  It's the most important side ingredient in beef noodles.
Another "okay" dish was my Taiwanese Railway Style Sausages (鐵路香腸便當)...the sausages, to our surprise, was quite nice...and it was perhaps the ONLY item that we enjoyed.  These were juicy and flavorful, sweet yet not over-sweetened.  Buddha Boy and I suspect that these sausages were supplied by our secret supplier...hehehehe!
(UPDATED 2010-12-23) Yups, it's been confirmed...and we were right...these Taiwanese sausages were, and still are, provided by our secret supplier...hehehe!
Buddha Boy ordered the Taiwanese Style Chicken with Three Spices (台式三杯雞飯)...though it said it's "Taiwanese Style"...but to those who are not familiar with this dish...classic style should not have fish cakes.  Anyways, this was a bit bland, and not much basil taste to it (main flavoring ingredient)...Buddha Boy said it was "poor"...LOL!
All rice combo meals came with four side dishes.  Honestly, these side dishes tasted better than the mains...LOL!!!

  1. Drool on the Chinese sausage. We will have a good Christmas day dinner with roasted tea-smoked duck and Chinese sausage. Yummy. Thank you Buddhagirl for that.

Filipinos usually have the big Christmas dinner on Christmas eve. I've made reservations at Top Gun for our Christmas eve dinner. We might bump into each other again if you decide to have dinner there too.

  2. Crispy,
At TG, food service can be slow during busy dinner periods.

We had dinner there yesterday (food service was fine), honey-garlic pork used really cheapass pieces of pork though, it's a hit and miss on that dish there.

  3. ahhh...The One...i had such a terrible service there.

i made reservation for party of 6 at 7pm and at 645pm, the restaurant called me saying that they are going to cancel my reservation because nobody showed up...my friends arrived and the restaurant wasn't even full or had a line up! that got me fuming...

food that night was decent but with the service i got, definitely not worth going back again :S

  4. @Queenie:
What? Not full and no lineup and they called to cancel your reservation?!?!?! That's stupid...we didn't get much service neither...especially the male server...a chubbier guy with the glasses...served with ignorant mono-tone...

    @Crispy:
Yea...as Buddha Boy mentioned...service and deliver is a bit slow when it's busy...though service is good, but the kitchen cant seem to catchup with the orders...so please be patient...oh yea...I also asked about the eggplant substitution...they told me it is extra charge...and MomJ did get charged every time...sorry I did not know about it before...I just eat and make Buddha Boy pay...hahaha! Typical wife...hahahahaha!

  5. My wife, who is Taiwanese, says that The One and LSD are not run by Taiwanese people. Does anyone have any thoughts or knowledge about that?

I have been to LSD 2-3 times spread out over a couple years and I have to say it has been getting weaker and weaker. Doubt I will give The One a chance.

  6. Wow BG, you sounded like you were in a bad mood that day ! ;-)

Sorry to hear your experience was not as you had hoped.

Funny, I've always had prompt and friendly service at The One. But they're always lunches and actually they can be busier in the late afternoon/evenings than lunch time.

And I've never had un-satisfactory food there. Again maybe the lunch experience is different, and of course you guys are professional foodies so you have the benefit of comparing The One with many other restaurants.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !

The female server that day was much better than the guy. I have to agree with BG, we weren't very satisfied with the food/experience. We don't sugarcoat our experiences, we tell is like it is in our view. We may have caught the service on a poor day, but the food really didn't make up for it. Friends that have tried The One in the past have raved about the food only to follow up later and tell us that things have been going downhill lately.

LOL, we're not professional foodies, we just really love food. BG and I are critical on TW 'cuisine' since she grew up in TW and I, having been to TW each of the last 4 years. We eat all over the island when we are there and more often or not, we are disappointed with what passes for BBT and TW food locally.

    @4SlicesofCheese
hey, we both married someone from TW. do you ever go to TW? I have a place for my ATF salt & peppery chicken in Taipei, and it's not in a night market.

sorry, i don't know who runs LSD or The One. BG may chime in if she knows.

Merry Christmas everyone. Have a safe holiday season!

Really? Unless LSD changed ownership, but from my knowledge, it's owned by the son of the original Lao Shan Dong in Taiwan...but many of the employed workers are from China so they do have an accent...like the girl who served us...hahaha...but mind you, many 外省人 in Taiwan, like myself, do not speak "Taiwanese" Mandarin (a blend of Fukien and Mandarin, VERY improper Mandarin), so many think we are from China.

    @Lotus:
Hahaha...no, not in bad mood that day...just got upset with the service...you know...the "ambiance" does make a difference in your taste buds...it's very psychological...hahaha...but the food was...well...poor...hahahaha!

  10. Ooops I thought you two grew up in HK. So you're from TW huh. I grew up in TP but arrived here when I was 9.

Merry Christmas, BB & BG, and all FFB-ers.

  11. @ LR,
    Merry Christmas to you too.
BG is from TW, I am born and raised in Vancouver, kind of surprising considering how much I love chinese food. When we visit TW, her mom (and mom's friends) really takes us to a lot of hidden gems.

Sorry to disappoint, but we don't have any exciting pics from Christmas dinners. But I did receive a few cookbooks that I'm definitely going to be testing out.

I was born in Taiwan (Taipei) but came here when I was 8 years old...and at first, I hated here...hahaha...cuz I didn't even know my ABCs...

Thank you for your kind wishes. Happy holidays to you too!

  13. BG: I came when I was 9 from Taipei, didn't know my ABC's neither. Weird huh ? Grew up in N. Bby ..... hardly any Chinese there in those days.

  14. @LR:
LOL!!! I know!!! I grew up in Coquitlam...not many Chinese around neither...I recall my bro and I were the only Taiwanese in our elementary school for the first few years...hahaha...the school didn't even have ESL...they basically took a storage room, put a table with three chairs...and that was our "ESL" classroom...hahahaha...quite funny now I think back...

  17. Hey Buddha Boy!
I am a CBC lol I think you know what that means. My wife is from Taiwan, Taoyuan specifically. I visit Taiwan once a year it is great, I love it.
    Where is Buddha Girl from??
Sorry what is ATF?? If you have any good leads for places in Taiwan please share :p

    ReplyDelete
  18. @4SlicesofCheese,
Yup, we're both CBC's. BG is from Taipei. We try to visit her mom there every year. I really don't know the addresses or names of the restaurants, it's BG's responsibility to understand me when i mention the dishes and interpret which restaurant I want. The best salt pepper chicken I've had is near a praying type place, I can find it on google maps, that's the only place i really can find.

My 'uncle' brought us to the Sheraton where there were a few dishes that wowed me. Check out our TW pics. Lots of food pics.

  20. To 4SlicesofCheese :

The owner of LSD and the One is indeed Taiwanese. LSD was a noodle house (still exsist) inside a mall in Wanhau, Taipei.

    To BG

The piano was recently added because there was a piano performance on Christmas eve and New Years eve. It was quiet a show and lovely.
