After a quick snack at Donair Dude, we ran some errands before deciding on dinner. Since we weren't too hungry, I opted to check out 29th Ave Cafe.
First off, at $10.50, the tonkatsu, or Pork Cutlet. A simple dish that was done well. This was moist and tender, however, it was far from being as good as Kingyo.
I'm a sucker for croquettes, but I was really disappointed with the Chicken Cream Korokke. There wasn't much chicken and the texture/flavor was lost in all that creamy filling. At $10.50, this dish was truly underwhelming and not a great value.
The Chicken Saute with Mushroom Sauce was a good dish. The chicken was moist and there was an ample amount of mushrooms. The gravy was simple and went well with rice. At $12.95, I'd order this dish again.
Buddha Girl's a sucker for Japanese Custard Pudding and she orders it wherever it's offered. The pudding was rich and creamy. It wasn't too sweet, but the syrup was. Yes, my wife was happy.
Simple menu, but quite limited. Overall, while the food was good, the value just wasn't there. Yup, we're cheap.

Compared to HK style cafe up the street (say, Honolulu on Kingsway), certainly, 29th Ave Cafe is expensive. However, it might be an apple/oranges comparison. Different cuisines, different expectations. In a somewhat bad analogy, I have always wonder why Greek and/or Italian food is so expensive (Stepho's aside), considering that, ingredients-wise, other than lamb, it is pretty much basic. I guess a similar principle applies here.
ReplyDeleteIt is comparing apples to oranges!!!! I would compaire 29th to Hi Genki...but price wise it still too pricey...especially the location...that being said...I havent been to Hi Genki for so long...gotta pay a visit!!!
ReplyDeletePS. I have always wondered the same...why Greek food costs so much? Just lamb and greed salad!!! Or Italian...just pasta and pizza!!! Hahahaa! Yup, I am so shallow...wahahahahahaha!
Given where Hi Genki is located, not to mention it being sort of an extension of Fujiya, I can't help to think they might be partially subsidized...
