One place we've always wanted to try for dim sum was this small, but elegant Chinese seafood restaurant right by Grand Villa Casino. So, on this last day of MomM's visit, we dragged her to try a new dim sum place.
We started off with a list of ten items...but quickly added two more to the list. What can I say? The fat couple needed more food!!! :p
I asked for hot sauce and I was given...XO Sauce. Looked sad, but tasted nice...much better than Come Along (see post 2011-10-04 Dim Sum @ Come Along Seafood Restaurant 金龍船海鮮酒家).
The Preserved Vegetable & Black Pepper with Pork Stomach Soup 胡椒豬肚湯 was disastrous. The pork stomach were not cleaned thoroughly...they smelled and tasted gross...yuck.
The Baked Seafood Tart 酥皮海鮮盞 had shrimp, scallop, peas and carrots as the filling. The tops were lightly sweetened with crispy bottom crusts. My favorite dish of the visit!
The Steamed Pork Dumpling 娥姐蒸粉果 had too much vegetables, not enough meat. Skin was not the thinnest around. Tasted okay.
The skins (wraps) of the Steamed Prawn Dumplings 皇朝蝦餃皇 were pretty much similar to the ones we had at Fraser Court...thin and Q. And just like Fraser Court, the shrimps were crunchy, but the quality was much better here.
MomM wanted Steamed Rice Roll with Shrimp & Chive 韭皇鮮蝦腸粉. The rolls were thin, but were not as thin as the ones from TG. The shrimps were the same quality as the shrimp dumplings. The dipping soy was quite salty.
Yup, the big boy ordered one of his ATF...Deep Fried Shrimp Roll 蒜蓉蝦春卷. Crunchy shrimps with strong hints of garlic. Nothing special, just something Buddha Boy loves.
Another dish we enjoyed was the Deep-Fried Radish Pastry 蘿白絲酥餅. The crust was amazing...so crispy! The filling was nice and tasty, but it could use a little more daikon.
The Steamed Pork Dumpling with Tobico 飛魚子燒賣 was quite interesting. Each dumpling had a shrimp on top AND on the bottom (inside the wrap). The pork had very minimal fat chunks. I'm usually not a fan of this dish, but I did enjoy it here.
The Pan Fried Dumpling with Minced Pork 正宗生煎鍋貼 were, surprisingly, "juicy"...very "juicy". I took a bite thinking it's just another plate of pot-stickers...but noooooooooo...the juice burst all over...even on my t-shirt! Of course, it's incomparable to the soupy XLBs at Long's Noodle House, but for pot-stickers...it's pretty scary...hahahaha!
Buddha Boy wanted to try the Prawn with Honey Walnut 蜜桃宮爆蝦. This was rather disappointing. The dish tasted...boring...and was very salty. Buddha Boy only ate a third of the dish and left the rest.

For dessert, I ordered the Ly Che & Osmanthus Sweet Cake 荔枝杞子桂花糕. Not sure why it's called "cake"...it looked more like jello to me. Made from agar-agar, the texture was a lot more firm than gelatin. Other than the visible amounts of goji berry and lychee, I was quite pleased with the strong fragrance of osmanthus...this was perhaps one of the best I've ever had.

Since you are east of Boundary, sorry dude, you are in Burnaby, not Vancouver, so reduce your expectations accordingly! This is something you have to wonder; since it ain't Kirin (i.e., Starlight Casino), how many Chinese people would actually drive to Grand Villa for Chinese food, specially considering you might as well drive a couple of clicks more to Vancouver or a couple of clicks south to Metrotown. I guess, based on that, they might scale the food more towards Western tastes, not necessarily all-Chinese customers.
ReplyDeleteSidenote: next time, if you see somebody asking for hot mustard and/or hot sauce, chances are that might be me! ;)
Hey!!! The restaurant was full of Chinese people!!!!!!!!!!!!! :p And the food actually tasted good!!!!!!!!!!! Grrr...KimHo...wawawa!!! Hahahahaha!
ReplyDeleteI ask for hot mustard sometimes...especially to go with hargow...hehehe!
