Pearl House Restaurant 珍珠小館 on Urbanspoon
As I walked out of G&H Vegetarian Food 積和食品, I noticed a familiar sign on the other side of the lot...Pearl House Restaurant?  I quickly snapped a picture thinking it's probably their storage for all the equipments (for both the BBT shop and the hot pot shop)...but I was wrong.
What? A Pearl House Restaurant in the middle of nowhere?  According to their grand opening sign, they only opened since January 31...so my visit was only...day seven?  Not a good sign...
I quickly browse through the menu hoping to see some Buddhist/Taoist-friendly vegetarian dishes.  The manager (I recall seeing her at their Burnaby location) came by and assured that they could do the vegetarian style of Tofu & Minced Pork in Spicy Sauce On Rice 麻婆豆腐飯, or Ma-Po Tofu on Rice.  I even heard her telling the kitchen to eliminate garlic/onions and use only vegetarian meat.  Well, the dish showed up vegetarian, but loaded with green onions...yup, I was not too happy, but I stuck with it.  The "ma-po" sauce was salty and the rice was dry...more points deducted.  I ended up eating only half and packed the rest.
Service was pleasant but inattentive.  My tea cup was left empty for almost twenty minutes, and the only time the server offered a refill was when she brought over the bill...yea...pretty useless now isn't it?  I was expecting a 20% discount as stated on the door sign, but apparently, that's only for their grand opening day.  The manager simply said, "we forgot to take that down"...what a joke.

  1. Consider this: unless you want to drive to No. 5 and Cambie or all the way to Garden City, there is almost nothing in the area. In fact, when I was working nearby, unless I packed lunch (most of the time), the only nearby options were some small coffe shops, the golf clubs (serving burgers), a Quizno's, the overpriced Bread Garden and Bunsmaster... Now, my question would be, since it is located sort of middle of nowhere, wonder what business they would have outside of the lunch crowd...

    1. I was wondering the same thing!!! I mean what kind of business are they expecting after lunch hour??? The funny thing was, I think the restaurant beside it also recently changed ownership. Two restaurants side by side in a industrial park...hmmm...

  2. I recently ate at Danny's Wun Tun House in the Ironwood Mall (Steveston Hwy/5 Rd). It was alright, I had a roast pork+bbq duck on r ice. But it was like $9 and I had to wait until around 11:30 (20 mins since arriving) for the roast pork. Portions were small, but tasty. I guess in that part of Richmond they can take advantage of the dearth of Cantonese restos nearby.
