WW wanted our advice on some personal issues so we offered to picked him up from work for a quick snack before driving him home. We ended up at Pho Hoa on Kingsway in Burnaby...bad idea.
Since we're still quite full from dinner, Buddha Boy and I only ordered snacks to share. First was the Summer Roll (Goi Cuon). A slender roll with small shrimps and limited fillers. Sad...very sad. Okay, at least the dipping sauce (mixed of hoi sin sauce, plum sauce and peanuts) was acceptable.
Next was the Fried Roll (Cha Gio). Again, a slender roll cut in half with limited amount of pork and vegetables. We paid approximately $2.50 for this crap? Nonsense.
Fried Chicken Wings (Canh Ga)...well, "a picture speaks a thousand words"...so I'll let it do all the talking.
WW is also a student of MomM, therefore, beef pho was out of the question. His Chicken Pho (Pho Ga) had a tasteless broth. He ended up adding a lot of hoi sin sauce to the bowl.
My glass of Coconut Juice (Nuoc Dua)...nothing special...freshly from frozen...LOL!!! I miss having this straight from fresh coconuts...then scoop out all the yummy meat at the end...mmm...
Why did we even bother coming to this place at the first place? Bad food with mediocre service, and most importantly, it's overpriced!!!

Pho Hoa, the McD's of Vietnamese restaurants... However, I believe there is a reason why they have been able to expand; just that we don't necessarily know or understand. For pho in the area, I would go to either Pho Hong or even Pho Tan (the former usually has combos for one bowl of pho plus a spring roll).
ReplyDeleteOh, one thing about pho ga. You have to be careful if you don't eat beef with this one as some places might "sneak" beef broth rather than actual chicken broth. I have been to places where the broth taste too "beefy" to be chicken... I personally would play safe in this case and go for their bun dishes. Then again, I am not restricted in that sense...
Not exactly sure how Pho Hoa stays in business...I am sure there's some kind of "business" that keeps it going...hahahahaha!
DeleteYup, I know what you mean about pho ga, I have caught restaurants sneaking beef broth. I usually just go with rice dishes to be safe.
