We met up with MomJ after we picked up MomM (my mom) from the airport. MomM's only in town for ten days and I've got bookings for her every single day!!! Hahahaha! Yup, I am her "manager" in Vancouver. :p
As soon as we sat down, MomM asked for an order of Chicken with Seasonal Vegetable on Rice 時菜雞球飯. Not sure why...but this dish has always been her "first" meal whenever she visits Vancouver...hahahahaha! While the meat was tender and the vegetable was fresh, the sauce was extremely salty...and tons of MSG!!!
The Fresh Shrimp Wonton in Soup 淨鮮蝦雲吞 was not too impressive either. The shrimp was definitely not "fresh"...in fact, the shrimp quality was quite poor. The wontons were so overcooked that the wraps broke apart easily. The MSG broth was very salty.
The two mothers wanted Sauteed Bitter Melon with Minced Pork & Preserved Olive 欖菜肉鬆炒涼瓜. Surprisingly, Buddha Boy and I enjoyed this dish. The bitter melon had a tiny hint of bitter aftertaste, but it wasn't strong. Maybe because we've been drinking bitter melon tea for the past months so our taste buds were more receptive to bitterness...hehehehe! Overuse of black bean sauce made this dish super salty.
Buddha Boy wanted to try the Deep Fried Boneless Chicken with Lemon Sauce 西檸煎軟雞. Well, this was definitely better than Mr. Ho's Wonton House...but not by much. The chicken was rather tough and the lemon sauce was quite diluted (lacked lemon fragrance). Hey, at least it was sweet...very sweet.
MomJ wanted to try the Pan Fried Duck Chin in Maggi Sauce 美極煎鴨下巴. First of all, other than MomM, none of us had duck chin before, so we really didn't know what to expect. The dish was purely bones...not ideal for meatatarians like us. I took a "bite" and gave my piece to my mom. These were salty...very salty...as if they poured a whole bottle of Maggi when pan-frying.
The Lemongrass Pork Chops 香茅豬扒 lacked the taste and fragrance of lemongrass. The chops were coated with thick batter and were overcooked. Too much sauce made the chops soggy. And just like all other dishes...this was extremely salty.
For starch, Buddha Boy had the Three Kinds Meat on Crispy Noodles 三絲炒脆麵. Unlike the previous dishes, this was bland. The noodles were extremely crispy. The "three kinds meat" consisted of shredded pork, shredded chicken and BBQ pork.
Since MomM was only in town for ten days, I asked her not to bring too much clothes (since we're going shopping in the States anyways) and save all the luggage room for my goodies. One of her two luggage was filled with my requested pastries and junk food...hehehe! The good kid, Buddha Boy, only requested two stove-top BBQ grills. Yup, we're crazy!!!
