Since we were in Maple Ride running our erransds, we thought we would meet up with Grandpa for dinner. Honestly, there weren't much choices in the area...Kirin, Wah Wing, Poco Ocean, or Deer Garden. I wanted to try Poco Ocean...but since Grandpa is still recovering from his chemo treatments, we settled with Kirin (more comfy).
I must say, out of all the Kirin's I have been to (except the one by Starlight), Coquitlam Kirin has the most elegant ambiance...however, there was this so-called "manager" dude really got on my nerves...grrrrrr...
Oh yea...remember my Kirin Downtown post couple weeks ago about their XO Sauce? Well, I stand by my point.
Again, just like when I was at TG couple nights ago...I really wanted some kind of soup...so we decided to go with what's available for the day...Stewed Pork Shank, Green Papaya and Fish Soup (豬展青木瓜燉魚湯)...it was quite nice...very flavorful. This was one of those Cantonese-style "stewed soups" where, usually, only the soup is consumed, the "ingredients" are usually discarded after.
I ordered their Smoked Pork Hock (薰蹄)...not bad but not great...
I also ordered the Wine Chicken (醉雞)...bad choice...it was flavorless...no good.
Both Buddha Boy and I thought this was the best dish of the night (yes...it's coming from two carnivores)...Stir-Fried Pea Sprouts with Garlic (蒜蓉炒豆苗).
Look familiar??? Yes...I ordered the exact same dish at TG couple nights ago...the server at Kirin kinda paused for a moment when I asked her to change from its original to Eight Treasure Eggplant Pot (八珍茄子煲)...and guess what...it tasted better than TG!!!
MomJ wanted to order a fish for Grandpa...but the only fish they have left was a sea bass that's over 2-lbs! First of all, I don't eat any steamed fish that's over 2-lbs, and secondly, I only eat steamed rock cod or red snapper...I suggested that the meat may be a bit tough, however, that stupid idiotic annoying so-called "manager" dude insisted that sea bass is always tender and soft, doesn't matter how big...so MomJ went with it. BAD DECISION!!! The Steamed Sea Bass (清篜鱸魚), even when it's cooked just right (still can see red on the bones) was a bit tough...even Grandpa and Grandma said so! Again...that stupid idiotic annoying so-called "manager" dude can kiss my fat chubby donkey. Yes...I'm annoyed with people like that.
Buddha Boy noticed something different on the menu, being me, I ordered it to try. Can't remember the name of this dish, but it basically had shrimps, scallops, snap peas, chicken, and supposedly, mango. However, since mango was not in season, they used cantaloupes instead. Overall, the dish was not bad...but it's not something I would order again. Buddha Boy practically ate the whole "nest" (雀巢) by himself...but I must agree with him...the nest was good...at least they used real taro...not vermicelli.
Just when I was about to close up the menu, I noticed Mui-Choy Pork (梅菜扣肉)...mmm...haven't had that for a while...so...I ordered it too!!! MomJ and I both agreed that this was better than the ones we had at TG...but not as good as the ones we had at Super Happiness Seafood Restaurant (no longer exist).
I have been eying the dessert menu as soon as we sat down...so I already made up my mind to order the Mango Pudding (芒果布丁)...I thought it was good, but not the greatest.
As usual, it's common for Cantonese-style restaurants to serve complimentary desserts at the end of the meal. I was quite surprised that they had two different types of "sugar water" (糖水)...one cold and one hot...we ordered two of each (yes...that's on top of the mango pudding). But I ended up ordering an extra Coconut Milk with Tapioca (椰香西米露)...hehehe...so in the end...I had two tapioca dessert soup PLUS one mango pudding...mmm...more fat to feed my fat!
Red Bean Dessert Soup (紅豆沙 or 紅豆湯) was the "hot" complimentary dessert.
